How much money do I need to retire?

There isn't a universal amount needed to retire. That figure is different for everyone and depends on your lifestyle, income needs, retirement goals, and how long your money may need to last.

If you're looking for a specific dollar amount, you're probably going to be disappointed. There isn't a magic retirement number that works for everyone.

You've probably heard advice like "save a million dollars" or "you'll need about 80% of your current income in retirement." While those guidelines have been around for years, they don't reflect everyone's reality today. Longer life expectancies, rising healthcare costs, inflation, taxes, and the lifestyle you want in retirement all play a role in determining how much you'll actually need.

The amount you need depends on your lifestyle, your expected expenses, your retirement age, taxes, inflation, and where your income will come from during retirement.

Here's something many people don't think about. Retirement isn't just about how much you've saved. It's about whether that money can create enough income to last for the rest of your life. Someone with a million dollars who spends too much each year could run out of money, while someone with less many have a retirement portfolio that lasts comfortably for decades.

Some things to consider:
*At what age would you like to retire?
*How much monthly income will you realistically need?
*Will you still have a mortgage or other debts?
*Do you want to travel?
*Besides Social Security, where will your retirement income come from?
*Have you considered how inflation or the stock market fluctuations could affect your retirement nest egg?

One of the biggest misconceptions about retirement planning is that reaching a certain account balance means you're ready to retire. In reality, retirement is less about hitting a specific number and more about creating a plan that provides reliable income for the years you'll depend on it.
